Nikita Kadan. Spectators series. 2016
Series Description
The double black “masks” on the faces featured in the Spectators series seem to transmit darkness both inside and outside. By refusing to wander in one’s own private darkness, an individual gains a chance at collective numbness in the face of the the darkness that gazes back at us [1].
Kadan’s Spectators, by highlighting the historical and ideological situatedness of avant-garde cultural production, shows not heroic memory against power, but covert forgetting as a personal survival tactic [2].
