For me, the main figure of the Odessa art scene is Alexander Roitburd. Now to a lesser extent, but earlier he had a strong influence on the formation of the artistic environment in Odessa. Perhaps also Seryozha Anufriev, who appeared in Odessa occasionally, but nevertheless gathered an unusual creative circle around him. All this was in 1995-96, and now everything in Odessa has somehow frozen again. Perhaps the reason is that Odessa is a tourist city and there is no established secular artists’ scene here. The younger generation, compared to Kyiv, is sluggish. There are few real wild ones. And, it seems, everything is fine in Odessa, there is an Odessa art school, but it progresses too slowly.
Dad (Lucien Dulfan) did not take seriously the fact that I would become an artist. Why? There is already one artist in the house. God forbid, a second one! He told me some things, and I realized that perhaps it would be a difficult fate, but very interesting. It seemed to me that this was a kind of Warrior’s Path, the Path of a loner. An artist must be alone, invent something of his own, without analogues in others. Learn to survive, sell your works, live by this labor.
At the beginning of my creative path, I hung out a lot with Alexander Roitburd and Sergey Anufriev, and dad began to be terribly jealous of me with them. He even once cut and threw away scraps of one of my first paintings. And now he has become simply unbearable! A man-monologue. America has greatly changed his way of thinking, the Odessa zest has gone, replaced by confidence that all dreams have already been realized and there is nothing more to strive for. He believes that he has achieved everything he wanted, and everyone else should also go towards this goal. But he, I think, deceives himself.
Fortunately, he lives in the USA and rarely comes home, which does not prevent us from often quarreling and making up. When we are reconciled, it is very cool – it seems to us that we understand each other, but… we immediately quarrel again.Comment type: Published comment
