Center for Urban History of East Central Europe

Institutions & Initiatives
– Present

The Center for Urban History of East Central Europe was founded in 2004 as a non-profit organization, and since then the Center has been conducting non-commercial activities.

In all its activities – whether academic or cultural – the Center adheres to the principles of openness to new perspectives, tolerance of differences, and responsibility for the future.

As an institute of historical research, we strive to generate new intellectual impulses for the development of current scientific issues and to promote the formation of informed opinion. Through information and open discussions, we aim to prevent the manipulation of history for political purposes. Through conferences, seminars, and exhibitions, we hope to popularize scientific and cultural exchange of information.

We provide students with the opportunity to conduct international-level scientific research within the country, preventing the “brain drain” abroad.

We strive to be part of the contemporary Lviv community, to cooperate fruitfully with the public and cultural institutions, and to be open to diverse environments.

The Center focuses not only on scientific research. As a structure living in the rhythm of the city, the Center seeks to go beyond academic activities and support public initiatives.

We want to help Lviv become a center of intellectual, scientific, and cultural life not only in Ukraine but also in Europe.

Some of the Center’s intentions are stated in the Foundation’s Charter dated November 9, 2005:

  1. To encourage research in the field of urban history of East Central Europe by funding a scientific research institute.
  2. To develop interdisciplinary urban studies in Lviv and East Central Europe through international cooperation with other scientific institutions.
  3. To promote the study of Lviv’s history as a center of multicultural historical heritage through cooperation with local scientific institutions.
  4. To participate in the cultural life of Lviv through organizing and supporting public initiatives.
  5. To promote internal and external understanding of Ukraine as part of Europe through international cultural exchanges and scientific research, supporting Ukraine’s perspective of joining the European Union.
  6. To develop public awareness of the importance of Lviv’s historical landscape through the collection and cataloging of information and documents, which will also help protect and preserve a significant part of the European historical heritage.
