Victoria Burlaka on Anatoliy Hankevych’s project “Communion”

Publications

“Communion” is a project fully fitting into the “postmodern” context of the 1990s in all its duality, twists, and turns of the “love and hate” circles towards the discourse of mystery and its fatal loss. To be an artist means constantly returning to the same thing. Early projects of A. Hankevich (together with O. Migas) are self-reflection of art, balancing on the thin and blurred line between yesterday and today […] Hankevich’s series of still lifes was dedicated to sacrifice; among other incidental entourage, there were significant components: bread and wine — the flesh and blood of Christ. The artists visualized the procedure of cleansing meaning, separating the wheat from the chaff. Extraneous meanings, objects that did not carry semantic load, were consistently removed from the visual field of the image — from these unnecessary “scraps” a sculpture was formed.Type of comment: Published comment
