Dmitry Dulfan. The Screen as a Middle Way (about the installation “Light Laboratory Visiting the Laboratory of Meaning”)

The whole point is that the concepts of the middle way, or the path of true reality, have always existed. They had to be discovered, remembered, expressed, and recorded all the time. But everything that was comprehended was always and everywhere reinterpreted in favor of delusions, because delusions are the greatest gift to humanity for living and developing. Without delusions, humanity would have long become boring, stopped developing and progressing, and turned into a totalitarian state of a single thought, desiring nothing and going nowhere. Delusions are the most useful thing for managing peoples and individuals, civilizations and states. There are many delusions: religious, mystical, economic, governmental, artistic, and the like, which in no way hinder but rather give life and development to all this. This is also the case with contemporary art. It is constantly in delusion. Every position is immediately a metaposition. It is like a Body trying to get out of its own path of reinterpretations. Of course, this body is the Truth, but it seems to produce sweat in the process of its path. This sweat is delusion – another direction or another artistic leap. But what to do? Be silent and listen to the silence of Truth or chatter, pondering disputes about truth? What? There are two paths, but there is a middle path – the third. It is not even a path or truth, it is what you feel when as a child you stand in the Opera House near the lowered concrete curtain from fires. It is a force that says – I am much bigger than you. Now, of course, the concrete curtain is nothing; there are things like space or the Universe, in which you can fully feel the power and strength of everything that surrounds us.

There are, of course, principles of our world and parameters for comprehending it. If they did not exist, we would not be able to realize our entire reality, characterize it, and be deluded.

Among the most well-known concepts were and will be the concepts of Light and Word. These concepts can denote the highest and most valuable ideals of our world. Their meanings are very, very comprehensive and multifaceted. They can be commanded and ruled, loved and hated, but like everything in this world – this is delusion. Only of very high definitions. So what is there then, you ask? Precisely the middle way – a plane at the junction of concepts, meanings, and truths. That which is near and nowhere. One can understand that this is Dao. But Dao is a definition, no matter how much Laozi fled from it, constantly describing what does not exist. Although he is the only one who came close to it. And Buddha, of course.

Dulfan’s installation – “Light Laboratory visiting the Laboratory of Meaning” – is another deception, illusion, lie, profanation, delusion, but it contains a small gap over which one cannot think or define it as truth. There is an approximate hint at the complete illusion of our world, which we ourselves construct.Comment type: Published comment
