Victoria Burlaka on the photo film “Criminal Week”

“The photo film ‘Criminal Week’ by Tsagolov was shown in 1994 as part of the ‘Free Zone’ in Odessa and then as part of the ‘Kyiv Art Meetings’ at the Ukrainian House. In the style of film stills, the artist stages the gray everyday life of crime — clashes, disputes, corpses, ‘freaks.’ Everything as it should be — a spectacle of an extremely exotic way of existence under the sauce of everydayness, routine, monotony, in the usual mode of ‘linear narrative,’ without surges or intensification. <…> Successful shots of ‘Criminal Week’ will later become a piano in the bushes, the basis for imagination-stirring painting.” [Burlaka V.
