Description

The book *Why There Are Great Female Artists in Ukrainian Art* is one of the first attempts to tell the story of Ukrainian art through a gender lens, spanning from the late 19th century to the artistic experiments of the early 21st century. This history is woven from the hidden pages of the biographies of women in Ukrainian art, where, alongside prominent figures, one can also find the names of those who have been forgotten or are little known to the general public.

The book shows how the opportunities for creative expression for female and male artists have changed over time, how obstacles on the path to professional recognition were overcome, and how the awareness of bodily experience has been transformed in their work. Of particular value are the collected archival materials concerning the role and place of women in art.

Recommended for adults.

Published to mark the exhibition ‘My Space’ as part of the PinchukArtCentre Research Platform.
